Head of Participation

Established in 1982, the Tron has built a reputation for producing and presenting ambitious, contemporary and proudly subversive theatre, reflecting the world we live in and representing the people of Glasgow and Scotland. It has established itself as a vital, creative hub for the Scottish theatre sector as a powerhouse of home-grown, new and contemporary Scottish work.
The Tron building, with its centuries-old heritage, stands proudly on the edge of the city, where the city centre meets the ever-changing East End of Glasgow. As well as the Tron’s self-produced programme, it is a critical cog in the UK’s touring infrastructure, a vital incubator and supporter of emerging and mid-career talent, as well as facilitating vibrant participatory arts opportunities for people across the city.

The Tron’s Head of Participation leads on and manages our participatory programme, curating and delivering a year-round body of work that engages the community of Glasgow. This role is central to the ethos of the Tron and serves as a member of the Senior Management Team. They will work closely with the Artistic Director and alongside colleagues from all departments of the organisation to create a rich engagement programme that is delivered to the highest possible standard, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity, reflecting the vision and values of the Tron.

Overarching Responsabilities:

• To strategically develop, deliver and monitor a programme of participatory activities and outreach, in line with the Tron’s objectives, ambitions and artistic programme.
• Deliver on and further develop our commitments, including our community and schools participation programmes.
• Ensure that the Tron’s Participatory programme is unique, and complements provision offered by other arts organisations in Glasgow.

Delivery

Lead responsibility for the planning and delivery of the Participation programme, facilitating projects ‘on the ground’ where appropriate. This might include:

• sessional delivery for the Our Show/Your Show Ensembles, Tronversations workshops, School engagement and workshops, Tron Takeover and the Tron Ambassadors programme.
• Co-ordinating communications with parents and guardians, facilitators and participants.

Management

• With the Artistic Director and Director of Finance & Operations, set and manage financial budgets and controls in relation to all departmental operations.
• Work closely with the Artistic Director and Development consultants to fundraise for the participatory programme.
• Ensure projects are continually monitored and evaluated, creating project reports for reflection and reporting (both internally and externally).
• Identify, recruit and manage key practitioners to ensure the very best delivery of the participation programme.
• Serve as a member of the Tron’s Senior Management Team, contributing to the smooth running of the organisation, both strategically and on day-to-day matters.
• Work alongside the Tron marketing team to ensure the marketing and
  communications for Tron Participation activity is clearly communicated, engaging and aimed to increase visibility,
• Ensure enquiries and bookings for the Participation programme are managed, while ensuring effective communication with participants.
• Liaise with other departments within the building to ensure the efficient co-ordination and delivery of the Participation programme.
• Effectively line manage the Creative Learning Facilitator and other members of the Participation Department, including conducting annual appraisals.
• Lead on and be responsible for organisational Safeguarding, with associated Child Protection and Adults at Risk policies across all Tron activity Responsibility for all Health and Safety matters, ensuring associated risk assessments that are required for the Tron Participatory Programme.

Collaboration and External Engagement

• Create and maintain meaningful partnerships with stakeholders, groups and individuals from a variety of backgrounds and sectors, including education, community and the third sector.
• Establish good relations, where appropriate, with relevant post holders in Creative Scotland, Glasgow City Council and other stakeholders
  Develop, maintain and deliver projects and outreach activities that further the aims and ambitions of the Tron.
• Project manage and deliver the Tron’s Pay It Forward scheme, ensuring
  distribution and engagement with multiple communities and groups from across the city.

Essential

• A proven track record of working as a theatre practitioner within a Participation or Creative Learning context.
• Excellent verbal, written and communication skills with the ability to prioritise tasks and work under pressure.
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate with people within a variety of contexts, as well as experience of engaging and managing staff.
• Experience of running a budget and fundraising.
• Safeguarding and child protection trained, and familiar with the administration of PVG and disclosure processes.
• Ability to deliver and actively participate in training and skills sharing, alongside a willingness to be involved in organisation-wide participatory projects.

Desirable

• Experience of working in a theatre building.
• Sound knowledge of UK and International theatre trends relating to education and outreach practice.
