About the Vacancy
Our Ancient Tree Verifiers verify the records which are added or updated by members of the public on the Ancient Tree Inventory (ATI) website. This involves visiting and recording ancient, veteran and notable trees, and checking that the records in your local area are as up to date as possible. By adding to and checking the accuracy of the data submitted by the general public, you will be adding to a dataset which already boasts over 200,000 records, helping to keep the largest ancient and tree database in the UK up to date and alive!
We are recruiting verifiers who are already familiar with the Ancient Tree Inventory, have an affinity for ancient trees and have already recorded many trees on the ATI website. We have a minimum requirement of verifying 1-10 trees every month, as we appreciate some people may volunteer more seasonally. This is to make sure our network stays active and knowledgeable about the ATI.
Key Responsibilities
- Responding to requests to record and verify specific trees which come under threat
- Using your local knowledge to seek out new trees and/or sites, which you will record
- Visiting and verifying new and modified tree records supplied by members of the public, enabling us to build a definitive database of ancient trees. We hope our Verifiers will be able to verify a minimum of 3-10 trees per month, allowing for you to volunteer seasonally, to ensure our network remains active and knowledgeable.
- Checking that older records in your area are as up to date as possible. This may require visits to trees already recorded and verified to check that the information is still relevant
- Complying with the Trust’s data protection policies and to have completed data protection training before undertaking the role
- Operating within our Volunteer Charter, policies, procedures, and guidelines
- As part of your role, you will need to log all the hours you volunteer through Assemble, your volunteering website, either on the desktop version or the mobile app
- Work within the risk assessment provided by your volunteer manager
Key Competencies
- Genuine interest in conservation
- Basic knowledge of map reading is useful
- A good knowledge of tree species is important
- You will be able to enter data and report relevant information to our ancient tree database
- A sensible regard for health and safety
